It is surprising to know that in the last 30 years, the number of people in India with weak vision or complete loss of vision became twice. This fact was revealed in reports of two different international organizations. It has been clearly stated in this report that most of the blind people in the world are currently in India.  This implies that after diabetes, our country has also become the hub of blindness. In such a situation it becomes very important to know can we keep our eyes healthy. In this article, we will talk about things that we should include in our diet so that our eyes may not become weak and light remains in them.

To maintain a healthy vision of our eyes, it is important to keep retina healthy. Lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids are needed to keep the retina healthy.  Both these carotenoids travel to the Macula of the retina and help in maintaining the eye’s ability to see.  Lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids also act as quenching free radicals of oxygen and filtering blue light, which protects the eyes from damage due to sunlight.

Lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids work to make the eyes healthy inside.  People who regularly use fruits and vegetables that have lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids do not have the problem of cataracts in old age.

There are some fruits in which both these carotenoids are found, while some fruits and vegetables contain only either lutein or only zeaxanthin. The fruits in which both these carotenoids are found include Orange, Peach and Green and Red Grapes.

Fruits from which lutein can be obtained include Kiwi, Mango and Orange. Along with these, Lutein is also found in Yellow Pumpkin.  

Zeaxanthin rich fruits

Zeaxanthin can be obtained mainly from orange.  Apart from this, it can also be found in ripe Banana and Spinach.  Apart from these, Amla is also very good for the health of the eyes.

Lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids, which are very important for the health of eyes, will be available in any fruit and vegetable commensurately to the conditions under which cultivation and storage of these fruits and vegetables have been done.
