A murder is said to be one of the worst crimes of all, and in India is punishable by death in many cases. One of the most common reasons for murders in India is honor killing, followed by murder to obtain money or property, and terrorism. Here are some of the most high profile murder cases in India.

The Sheena Bohra and Aarushi Talwar Case

The Sheena Bohra case was one very high profile case that involved Indrani Mukerjea and her ex-husband. Indrani Mukerjea is the wife of the former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea and she killed her own daughter from a previous marriage in collaboration with one of her other ex-husbands and their driver. It is said that she killed Sheena because she disapproved of her relationship with a boy, and because Sheena was refusing to return the money that Indrani had illegally funneled to Sheena’s account.

Another major high-profile murder case is the Aarushi Talwar case, which remains unsolved till date though the girl’s parents were convicted of the crime. In 2008 May, the 14 year old girl was found dead in her bedroom with her throat slit. Initially, the house help was suspected of the murder, but the next day his body too was found on the terrace of the Talwar residence. The parents were initially acquitted due to lack of concrete evidence, but they were later convicted and imprisoned by a CBI court saying that they were the only ones in the house at the time of the murder. 

Other major murder cases include Sandhya Pandit, Laila Khan, and Naina Sahni

Sandhya Pandit was the sister of Bollywood actress Sulakshana Pandit. She went missing from her home and two months later, her body was as remains in a marsh 200 meters from their house. The police arrested her son as the possible culprit, and it was theorized that he had a drug habit over which he often fought with his mother, and he may have killed his mother for that. However, he was acquitted by the court due to the lack of any concrete evidence. 

Other popular murder cases include that of Pakistan born actress Laila Khan, in which case her stepfather was said to have murdered her to gain property and valuables belonging to the family; and that of Congress leader Naina Sahni who was murdered by her husband and her body was thrown into a tandoor after being chopped to pieces in order to dispose off the evidence.
