  • India’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat is no more.  General Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 14 other army officers died in a helicopter. An Indian Air Force helicopter had crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife and several other officers were on board the helicopter.  Official sources said the Mi-17V5 helicopter took off from Sulur for Wellington and there were 14 people on board including the crew. CDS was on his way to Defense Staff College in Wellington. On the death of 13 people including General Rawat, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and many other leaders have paid tribute.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of the Rs 339-crore Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project that connects two iconic sites of the temple city – the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Ganga Ghats. Modi offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and planted a Rudraksha plant in the temple premises. The event was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP President JP Nadda and a large number of saints from across the country. The idea behind the project is to ensure that all the heritage structures remain preserved. A total of 23 buildings will be inaugurated in the first phase of the project. 
  • Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav reached his uncle Shivpal Yadav’s house on Thursday.  After the meeting ended, Akhilesh announced an alliance with his uncle. After leaving Shivpal’s house, Akhilesh wrote on social media that he met the national president of PSP and the matter of alliance was decided. The policy of taking regional parties along is continuously strengthening the SP and leading the SP and other allies to a historic victory. 
  • Army Chief General MM Naravane has taken over as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC).  There was speculation that he would be made the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the country, but in the meantime, he was handed over the post of COSC on Wednesday. The post of chairman of the committee comprising the chiefs of the three services was lying vacant after the untimely demise of the country’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash on December 8. Now the claim of becoming CDS is strong. also said that there is no discussion about the new CDS yet. General Naravane has been made the COSC chairman for being the senior-most chiefs of the three services and this has strengthened his claim to be the next CDS.
  • Harnaaz Sandhu of India has become the 3rd Miss Universe from India. After 21 years, an Indian beauty has got this title. Lara Dutta became Miss Universe in the year 2000 after Sushmita Sen in 1994. Since then India was waiting for this title. The 70th Miss Universe pageant took place on 12 December in Israel.  In this, Harnaaz left behind the beauties of 79 countries and was crowned Miss Universe.  Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela got a chance to judge the Miss Universe contest. She was part of the jury team for India.
  • Retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 4.91% in November. It was recorded at 4.48% in October.  Inflation figures remain in the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the fifth consecutive month. RBI aims to keep the inflation rate at 4% (plus or minus 2%). Retail inflation stood at 4.48% in October.  Whereas earlier it was 5.30% in August while it was 5.59% in July. Whereas in the same period a year ago, retail inflation was 6.93%.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) mandatory for cross-border transactions for capital or current account transactions of Rs 50 crore and above with effect from October 1 next year. The LEI is a 20-digit number used to uniquely identify parties to financial transactions worldwide to improve the quality and accuracy of financial data systems. The identifier criterion has been introduced in a phased manner for participants in Over-the-counter (OTC) derivative, non-derivative markets, large corporate borrowers and large value transactions in centralized payment systems. From October 1, 2022, banks will have to obtain an ‘LEI’ number from resident entities (non-individuals) carrying out any capital or current account transactions.
  • The central government on Wednesday approved the necessary reforms for the electoral process. The Election Commission had sent its recommendations to the government. Now an adult will get 4 chances in a year for voter registration. Till now he only got one chance. According to the report, the government will introduce these reforms in the winter session of Parliament itself. Moreover, Aadhaar can also be linked with one’s voter ID, although it will depend on the wishes of the voter.  The Election Commission had said that the results of the pilot projects initiated in this regard have been positive.

  • On December 16, India celebrated its 50th Vijay Diwas. Bangladesh, once a part of Pakistan as East Pakistan, was born as an independent nation on 16 December 1971. Due to India’s victory over the Pakistani army and the formation of Bangladesh, every year on 16 December, this day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas in India and Bangladesh. India played a very important role in the formation of Bangladesh. In fact, India was forced to jump into this war only because of the atrocities on the Bangladeshi people of the Pakistani army. Tension between Pakistan and India increased due to India’s resistance and in the end, on 16 December 1971, 93,000 soldiers of Pakistan kneeled before India.
  • On Thursday, 14 positive patients of Omicron have been found in the country. The maximum number of 5 new patients have been found in Karnataka, while 4-4 patients have been found in Telangana and Delhi and one new infected has been found in Gujarat.  Now the total number of infected with Omicron in the country has reached 87. The central government will review the corona vaccination plan by the end of the year. The government has set a target of administering both doses to 65% of the country’s adult population by the end of December itself.
