‘Koozhangal’, A Tamil Drama Won Best Film Award In IFFR 2021

Indian Film Koozhangal(Pebbles) has been awarded the Tiger Award for Best Film at the 50th Rotterdam International Film Festival. This Tamil language film is directed by Vinodraj PS. Pebbles is the first Tamil film and all-time second Indian film, after SanalKumar’s S Durga, to get this coveted Award, with Vinodraj winning in his debut effort.

Film’s Plot

The story of the film is inspired from the life of Vinodraj’s own sister. The film’s story revolves around an alcoholic husband. Due to alcoholism his wife left him, after which her husband leaves with his son to find and bring back his wife.

The jury of the festival described the film as “a lesson in pure cinema”, saying that while the filmbased in a remote part of the world, it captured them for its beauty and humour.

About Tiger Award

 The Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) tweeted that the IFFR’s most prestigious Tiger Award is given to the Vinodraj PS’s Pebbles. On receiving this award Vinodraj became emotional and thanked the jury. 40,000 Euro cash is given under the Tiger Award and this amount is distributed between the producer and the director of the winning film.

Significantly, the film’s co-producers are Nayantara and her partner Vignesh Sivan. The film is a rural drama. The trailer of the film portrays a child standing on dry and hot soil barefoot in the harsh sunlight. Suddenly his alcoholic father comes in front of him and the child stares at him.  After which his father beat him a lot and says that your mother has taught this. In fact, she runs away teasing her alcoholic husband.  Now what happens next will be known only after watching the film.
