Coronavirus: Newlyweds Trapped on Honeymoon in the Maldives after Lockdown

A newly married couple from South Africa found themselves trapped in a hotel in the Maldives after the spread of highly dangerous Coronavirus, which has killed more than 75,000 people around the world, and this disease forced the country to shut down the airports on an urgent basis.

Couple Olivia,27 and Raul De Freitas,28, came to celebrate their honeymoon period for six days in paradise at the Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives before going back to their country. They arrived in Maldives on 22nd March and were supposed to return back on the following weekend.

According to the New York Times, due to increasing in the travel restrictions in various countries, the couple had check with their travel agent before starting their journey.

On that time, there no restrictions for the people of the country and he told them that all South Africans will be allowed to back home. Nevertheless, that was not the case and the couple are now stuck all alone in the hotel. They are the only guest in the hotel, the staffs are rying to give them every comfort like  in normal days they do.

Olivia said in the statement, ‘It’s incredible that we get this extra time.’ She also added that, Everyone says they want to be stuck on a tropical island, until you’re actually stuck, ‘It only sounds good because you know you can leave.’

They were on the fourth day of their honeymoon when they got noticed notice from South Africa that the airport would all be closed by midnight. And the journey from the Maldives to South Africa, it takes approx 17 hours and it was impossible for them to get back on time. And that’s why they would have never made it happen.

The De Freitas said they also thought of other options like taking an hour-and-a-half speedboard rode to reach to the main Island’s airport, but the Maldvies also announced  the lockdown and banning the foreign travellers. They got afraid that if they left the hotel and might not be allowed to get back.

They also that they will know if flight permissions have been shorted out Monday In spite of their countries lockdown lasts till April 16 for the mean time.
