What Is The New Lambda Variant Of Coronavirus? What Are The Risks Associated?

Menace of Novel coronavirus is not over yet, as lakhs of new cases are still coming every day worldwide. COVID has made everyone’s life difficult with its new emerging variants. At present, when the worldis concerning about Delta and Delta Plus variants, in the meantime there is news of a new strain. This strain of COVID is named the Lambda variant, which was originally discovered in Peru and has been reported in the United Kingdom.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, ‘the virus is constantly changing its form through mutation and all its variants are expected to come.  Sometimes new variants come and sometimes they disappear.  According to reports, cases of lambda variant variants have also been confirmed in southern Brazil but it is spreading rapidly in the United Kingdom. Origin of the Lambda variant:

The lambda variant was first detected in Peru in August 2020 and has since been reported in about 29 countries. Experts claim that many mutations have been observed in this type of spike protein, which increases its transmissibility to a great extent.

Are available vaccines enough to tackle this?

 How serious and infectious the lambda variant can be, as well as the efficacy of vaccines against new variant can be only observed only after investigation. However,  Public Health England (PHE) says taking two doses of the vaccine can still avoid the risk of hospitalization after being infected. This implies that PHE considers COVID vaccines to be effective against new variant.

Public Health England (PHE) has additionally reported six cases of lambda variants from 23 February to 7 June. The health body says you can avoid the risk of hospitalization after getting the vaccine. Vaccines are also effective against these variants.

WHO labelled it as ‘variant of interest’ :

On June 15, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the lambda variant as a ‘variant of interest’. The reason was the widespread presence of this variant in South America. The WHO reported the presence of ‘lambda variants’ in about 29 countries.

At the same time, Public Health England (PHE) has named the lambda form of COVID as ‘Variant Under Investigation(VUI). It has been told by PHE that this new variant of the corona is under investigation.

What are the symptoms of the Lambda variant?

Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) has released a list of symptoms for people to beware against the new variant. The symptoms include Fever, Persistent cough, Loss of smell and taste. One of these symptoms can be seen in any of these infected people. To prevent the spread of the virus and avoid its seriousness, get yourself tested without delay.
