11 Days Bloody War Comes To An End; Israel And Hamas Agree To Ceasefire

Israel and Hamas calls for ceasefire

A ceasefire agreement has been reached on Thursday night after an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas. Both the Israeli government and Hamas have confirmed this. The ceasefire was proposed on behalf of Egypt, to which the Palestinian government also agrees. Islamic Jihad, the most powerful radical organization in Palestine after Hamas, has also agreed to this decision.

Hamas is considering this as its victory

Hamas fighters in Palestine’s Gaza strip celebrated this truce by playing the drums. Whereas, West Bank celebrated till late at night by fireworks.

Khalil Al Hayya, who holds the number two position in the political wing of Hamas, said that is it is a joy of victory and people should celebrate.He further said that the construction of the houses ravaged in Israel’s Airstrike will be started soon. In the 11 days of the war, 1 lakh 20 thousand people have escaped from the Gaza strip.

11 days of bloodshed

So far 232 people have died in the war between Israel and Hamas. These include 65 children. Moreover, more than 1900 people have been injured in the war.Major loss of life and property has been done in the Gaza Strip. About 220 people died in the region.  Hamas has been carrying out rocket attacks on Israel till now from Gaza. Hamas attack killed 12 Israelis. It also includes 2 children, 1 soldier, 1 Indian woman and 2 people from Thailand. Hamas has fired a total of 4300 rockets on Israel.

‘Unconditional and mutual’ Ceasefire

A statement was issued by Israel, confirming the ceasefire. It says a Cabinet meeting was held on security matters. It was also attended by the Chief of Defense Staff, the Chief of Internal Security and the Chief of the Intelligence Agency, Mossad. It discussed the Egyptian proposal, which offered to stop the ongoing conflict with Hamas. No conditions are placed for the ceasefire. Both sides agree on this. The ceasefire starts Friday. 

UN Chief appreciated Egypt and Qatar

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres welcomed the move. He said, “I welcome the ceasefire between Gaza and Israel, after 11 days of deadly hostilities. I extend my deepest condolences to the victims of the violence and their loved ones.”

Calling on all sides to observe the ceasefire, Guterres commended Egypt and Qatar for the efforts carried out, in close coordination with the UN, to help restore calm to Gaza and Israel. He said that the international community should come together to revive the war-torn infrastructure.

Role of US

US President Joe Biden had spoken to Netanyahu twice.  The German Foreign Minister also spoke to the Israeli PM. Biden also used the influence of Saudi Arabia and Egypt on Hamas. This is the reason why Hamas was also under tremendous pressure with Israel.
