Lal Bahadur Shastri’s murder mystery

Lal Bahadur Shastri has been one of the most modern Prime Ministers our country has ever seen. He was the 2nd Prime Minister of India and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress.  He was born on 2nd October In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He took an active part in the Indian National Movement and was also sent to jail for sometime. He gave the popular slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.

Throughout his tenure, he took many commendable steps for the development of the nation. He worked very hard for the nation’s progress. Still, his death is a point of many controversies till date. Generations have passed, but conspiracies surrounding what caused Shastri’s death have not ceased. If it were some other country, the strange case of a prime minister’s death would have been properly inquired into by a high-powered team with all relevant documents being placed in the public domain, unlike India.

After the Indo-Pak war of 1965, Prime Minister Shastri travelled to Tashkent to sign an agreement that would formally end the war.Around 4pm on January 10,1966, after signing the Tashkent accord, Lal Bahadur Shastri reached the villa he was provided by his Russian hosts. In the evening, he had a light meal prepared by Jan Mohammad, the personal cook of  the Indian ambassador to Moscow, TN Kaul.

The same night, his health started deteriorating and before his doctor could do anything to help him, he passed away. The symptoms of his death looked like that of a heart attack.

There have been many versions behind the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Initially , the suspicion was on the cooks and butler responsible for serving him, who were thoroughly interrogated. Others suspect that it was a case of poisoning but no proof has been arrived at yet.

All efforts to unveil the mystery behind his death have resulted in further confusions and suspicions. Even today there must be several classified records about Shastri’s death which are non-accessible. RTI filed for the same have not resulted in anything substantial either. Time and again, people have tried to reach a conclusion but due to the lack of availability of records, it is still an unsolved mystery.
