  • Daniil Medvedev clinched his first Grand Slam trophy in the US Open Men’s Singles, 2021 final by defeating World No 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on September 12, 2021. This match lasted for two hours and sixteen minutes. World No. 2 Medvedev of Russia has ended Djokovic’s dream of sweeping the US, French, Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same year for the first time since 1969. 
  • Sri Lanka’s star fast bowler Lasith Malinga has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 14 September 2021.  Earlier, Malinga had taken retirement from Tests and ODIs. Malinga was not found a place in the Sri Lankan team for the ICC T20 World Cup.
  • Lately, Virat Kohli has announced to step down as the captain of the T20 format. However, he will continue to be the captain of the ODI and Test teams. Kohli has shared this information by tweeting on 16 September 2021. Virat Kohli has taken this decision due to the ever-increasing pressure on him. After relinquishing the captaincy of at least one format, the pressure on him will be relieved and he will also be able to concentrate better on his batting.

  • The IPL had to be postponed midway in May due to the second wave of COVID-19 in India. Till that time only 29 matches of the tournament could be held. The first match of the second half of IPL 2021 was played between Chennai and Mumbai.
  • Broadcast of the IPL has been proscribed in Afghanistan by the Taliban government. Star Afghanistan cricketers like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeebur Rahman are already taking part in IPL 2021. Former Afghanistan Cricket Board media manager tweeted about this. He cited the possible anti-Islam content like girls dancing and the attendance of short hair women behind the ban.
  • Mithali Raj, the captain of the Indian women’s team, has completed 20 thousand runs in her career while doing wonders in the first ODI against Australia. Mithali completed 20 thousand runs in First Class Cricket, List A and T20 together. She has become the first female player to achieve this feat.

  • The BCCI announced that the former India skipper MS Dhoni will mentor the team for the T20 world cup, which will be played in UAE and Oman in October and November. Dhoni announced his retirement from international limited-overs cricket on August 15, 2020.
  • England Test captain Joe Root and Eimear Richardson of Ireland have been voted as the winners of the ICC Players of the Month for August 2021. Root was voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August for his consistent performances in the Test series against India. Ireland’s Eimear Richardson has had a wonderful August as well and was chosen for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August 2021.
  • R Raja Rithvik became India’s 70th and latest Chess Grandmaster by achieving the third and final Grandmaster Norm during the competition in Hungary recently. The All India Chess Federation and Vishwanathan Anand had congratulated Raja Ritwik for becoming the Grandmaster.
  • Pankaj Advani of India won the Asian Snooker Championship 2021 by defeating Amir Sarkhosh.  He has won this title for the second time in a row. Healso won the last Asian Snooker Championship held in 2019. In 2019, Pankaj also became the only player to have won titles in all forms of billiards, snooker, 6Reds and 10Reds competitions.
