Historic Israel-UAE Diplomatic Relations Deal; Know What It Means In Geo-Politics?

by Shatakshi Gupta

After the mediation of the U.S, the relationsbetween Israel and the United Arab Emirates are normalized, and an agreement took place between the two.  As a key announcement of the agreement, Israel has at present suspended its annexation plan to occupy large parts of the West Bank. In a joint statement about the deal, US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi’s Prince Mohammed Al Nahyan said that this historic breakthrough is expected to increase peace in West Asia.

Until now Israel had no diplomatic relations with the Gulf nations.  Now the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic relations.  The UAE has become the third Arab country which recognises Israel.  This is the third Israeli-Arab settlement since Israel became independent in 1948.  Egypt entered into a settlement in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.

The agreement is expected to usher in a new sense of friendship between the two countries. The joint statement said that the delegation of Israel and the United Arab Emirates would be in the coming weeks will sign bilateral agreements on investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications and other issues. The two countries are expected to exchange ambassadors and embassies soon.  Apart from this, the two countries will also start a flight from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv, which will allow the Muslims of the UAE to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem.

On this agreement, Trump said, “Now that the snow has melted, I hope that some more Arab-Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates.”  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also termed the deal as historic.  In his address on television, he said that the plan to capture the West Bank has been postponed for the time being.  However, he said that all documents related to this plan will not be locked in the files, but will remain before him.

Until now Israel had no diplomatic relations with Arab countries.  But concerns related to Iran have now led to informal contact between these two countries.  Palestinian leaders are said to be surprised with the deal.  The Palestinian government has also recalled its ambassador to the UAE.  Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have also termed the deal as shameful.

Donald Trump is pleased with the deal between Israel and the UAE.  This is seen as a victory for his foreign policy ahead of the presidential election to be held in November this year.  Donald Trump, who has caused a lot of damage to his reputation for COVID-19 handling, will definitely try to capitalize on it in the election.

White House officials said Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner, US Ambassador to Israel David Freedman and Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz worked day and night to made the deal possible. In addition, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien were also in constant dialogue with the two countries.

Impact of this agreement on India?

India has nothing to do with this agreement directly. But the things hidden behind the agreement are in the favour of India. In such a situation, it would be right to call it India’s diplomatic victory. America has made this peace agreement between the Islamic country UAE and the Jewish country Israel. Because America has to take revenge on Iran in the Middle East and also on China. China was entering this area through Iran. Iran has neither friendly relations with the UAE nor with Israel.

With this move of America, China’s neo-imperialism will now be limited to Iran only. The same situation is going to happen for Pakistan, though Pakistan has friendly relations with the UAE, due to this deal, now it will be in dilemma either to stand with Israel or with rest of the Islamic nations, this is again in the diplomatic favour of India. Both the UAE and Israel are very good friends of India. In such a situation, the friendship of the two countries will make India stronger in this region.
